The 2011 Season
After a very active off-season, The Flying Platypi were very excited to tackle the challenge of the 2011 game Logo Motion. By the end of the build season, we had a robot that could pick up inner-tubes off the ground and reach up to 10 feet in the air.
Our first regional competition, Peachtree, was an exciting event where we tried to iron out the kinks in our robot's design. We were able to compete with 47 other teams from several different states and have a close look at their robots. After the first day of qualification rounds, we were happily surprised to receive the Best Website Award for this website.
After all the qualification rounds ended Saturday, we ranked 15th out of 48 teams and were picked by #2967 IronWorks to play with them as 6th seed. Along with #1848 SOUP, we managed to beat the 3rd seed alliance and make it to the semi-finals. Thank you IronWorks and SOUP for being great alliance partners! During the Saturday awards, we learned that our team had won Underwriters Laboratory Hard Hat pins for our pit presentation.
The North Carolina Regional was our "home" competition and we were happy to return for its second year. North Carolina was a big regional with 52 teams from up and down the east coast competing. Most of the time during the competition we were focused on installing and tweaking our robot and helping out #3845 Yellow Jackets pass inspection. On Friday we were again surprised to receive the Best Website Award.
Saturday was tough as we ended up seeded 37th out of the 52 teams. Fortunately we were the third pick for the 7th seed alliance. Thank you #527 Dragons and #1225 Gorillas for picking us. We again received Hard Hat pins, this time for program initiative at the tournament. The biggest shock was when they announced that our team had won the Regional Chairman's Award!
A few weeks later found us on the road to St. Louis. After a long bus ride, we arrived. The entire team had a great time interacting with other teams from around the world, attending Roboprom, and watching a Black Eyed Peas concert.
